New minor Forcing (NmF)

This popular convention is used when the Opener rebids 1NT or 2NT. Responder bids the new minor as an artificial way to ask about (or “check back” on) the majors. NmF showing at least game-invitational values and usually a 5-card major.

Example Auctions: In each of these auctions, responder’s second bid is new minor forcing. The responder is asking the opener about the majors (typically looking for 3-card support).

In each auction, Responder rebid is New Minor Forcing. These bids do not necessarily show a real suit; they are simply forcing bids that ask partner to describe his hand.

Opener’s Rebids:

  1. Bidding a 4-card major
  2. Showing 3-card support for partner’s major
  3. Bidding no-trumps with a stopper in the unbid suit
  4. Raising the “new minor” with 4 cards in that suit
  5. Rebidding his suit if none of the above conditions are met

Check Back Stayman (CBS)

Checkback is a variation of the New minor Forcing convention after opener rebids 1NT. Irrespective of which two suits have been bid prior to opener’s 1NT rebid, 2♣ is always an inquiry (Checking back 3 card support for responder suit).

If you use CBS, all above 2♣ sequence are asking bid looking for 3-card support for responder’s suit. Yes, you and partner no longer can stop in 2♣ which is small price to the advantage you gain.

Opener’s priorities are:

  1. Showing 3-card support for partner’s major
  2. Bidding a 4-card major
  3. Bidding 2♦ if none of the above conditions are met.

As you can see 2♦ reply same as 2♦ reply when you use regular Stayman (after opening 1NT).
